A SAILOR'S-EYE MEMOIR 2019

GOOD TIMES IN UNCLE SAM'S CANOE CLUB

UNDERWAY

BY ERIC ATNO

Twenty-six years in the Navy and Navy Reserve. A life spent largely at sea. And the stories that don't fit neatly into an official record.

Part memoir, part sea-story confession, Underway takes a frank, often funny, sometimes sobering look at life aboard and beyond the horizon.

NOT A TACTICAL MANUAL. NOT A TOM CLANCY NOVEL.

Life aboard, without the polish.

There are books about the Navy's ships, strategy and warfare. Eric Atno wanted to tell something else: what the long, strange experience of being a sailor actually felt like.

Drawing on his twenty-six-year career, Underway moves through the comic and the tragic, at sea and overseas, during peace and war. Its telling is candid, personal and deliberately a little sideways.

THE YEARS

A quarter-century, and then some.

Atno served in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserve for twenty-six years, reaching the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. The book looks back on the part of that career lived on the water and far from ordinary routines.

Eric Atno.
Sailor first.
Storyteller always.

Eric Atno spent twenty-six years in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserve, rising to Senior Chief Petty Officer. By his own account, much of that time was spent at sea or deployed overseas—where he was also a prolific writer.

People urged him to write a book. Years later, he did. He chose to recount his experiences through a third-person alter ego, giving himself room to tell the funny, difficult and deeply human parts of military life.

A sailor's perspective. A writer's own voice.
